geplaas op 09:08 (GMT+2) Vr., 31 Jan. 2020

Hierdie week het die SA wolmark effens teruggesak / This week saw the SA wool market trading somewhat lower

MARKANALISE

Daar is in totaal 7275 bale aangebied, waarvan 95.7% verkoop is. Die koper was Modiano. Baie geluk met die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSES

The 17th wool auction of the 2019/20 season took place this week and the Cape Wools Merino indicator traded 0.5% and 81 points lower and closed at a clean price of R174.63/kg. The Australian EMI decreased by 1.8%. The Rand traded 2.3% weaker against the US Dollar this week and 1.6% weaker against the Euro, compared to the previous sale. Good quality Merino fleeces still performed well and saw healthy competition amongst buyers, despite the outbreak of the Corona virus and the extended Chinese new year celebrations. The largest decrease this week of 1.4% was in the 19 micron segment. Standard Wool was the major buyer on the auction this week, followed by Lempriere SA, Modiano and Stucken. A total of 7275 bales were on offer, of which 95.7% was sold. On the OVK auction 2176 bales were offered of which 90.1% was sold. The highest price of R145.90/kg was achieved for a 4 bale lot BBF of 17.9 microns, from the clip of  D.E.S Nel from Barkly East. The buyer was Modiano. Congratulations on the achievement!

FORECAST

This week saw the SA wool market trading somewhat lower, compared to the previous auction. This weaker Rand prevented the local market to drop further, with a still slightly better performance than Australia. The volumes of wool received in the stores of the brokers this week, are 56% lower, compared to the same week of the previous season and accumulatively still 0.8% lower. Although it is still critical dry in a lot of production areas, reports of good rains were received, which resulted in welcome relief and good news for producers. OVK wants to invite our producers to contact us if any advances on fibre delivered, or financing is needed. Also learn more about OVK’s new commission structure. Please call our fibre office in Port Elizabeth or your Technical Field Officer for more information. The OVK website can also be visited for more details. We emphasize that OVK is committed to assist our producers to the best of our ability in good  as well as difficult times. Foot and mouth disease and the limitation conditions on the movement of livestock, is still a challenge for the livestock industry, which will clearly not be solved in the short term. It is therefore necessary for producers to have knowledge of the clinical presentation of the virus and the associated risks. The disease must be managed properly, in order to prevent enormous economical losses in the long term. Amid the Coronavirus outbreak in China, world markets are generally reacting quite nervously. The view Tim Hunt, Rabobank's head of food and agribusiness research in Australia, is that the influence of the Corona virus on the wool market won't be serious in the short term if China can quickly stop the spreading of the contamination. If the crisis proceed for longer than three months though, it could result in second-round impact, because the income of the general population in China will be negatively influenced with probable limitation on the buying of clothing. Karoo paralysis is another condition which could cause extreme deaths, with negative economical losses as a result. Treat animals prophylactically and attempt to, if possible, manage grazing systems in order to avoid contaminated camps during the active period which runs from February to May. Animals which already present symptoms of lameness, should be treated very carefully and not be driven unnecessarily. That could lead to acute deaths. Such animals should be treated on the spot, by the application of a dip or the physical removal of the parasites.  Bio-security should therefore enjoy priority at all times in order to protect flocks.  The next wool auction is scheduled for 6 February 2020 where 6427 bales will be on offer.
